Russians executed unarmed Ukrainian POW with sword, Ombudsman reacts
The Russians have committed another bloodthirsty war crime - they executed an unarmed Ukrainian prisoner of war with a sword. They continue to show disregard for any norms and laws, according to the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets.
“Another war crime - the Russians executed an unarmed Ukrainian prisoner of war with his hands tied with duct tape. The level of barbarism and bloodthirstiness is incomprehensible. Such actions are a gross violation of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War,” Lubinets said.
He sent letters to international organizations, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations (UN), to record another Russian army violation of human rights.
“I would like to emphasize that such demonstrative executions are aimed at demoralizing Ukrainian society. However, seeing such actions, we have to become even more determined in the fight against the aggressor,” the ombudsman added.
Russia's war crimes
In June 2024, a discussion panel "The Humanitarian Dimension. The Release of Prisoners and Deportees" took place as part of the peace summit in Switzerland. At that time, Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine had documented almost 130,000 cases of war crimes committed by Russian terrorists, including 301 cases of sexual violence. Russia killed more than 12,000 civilians, including 551 children.
Lubinets added that all those held in Russian captivity are subjected to systematic torture. At that time, at least 14,000 such cases were confirmed.
