Russian forces shelled Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region on December 12. One person was killed, and another was injured, according to Oleh Syniehubov, the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.

"Today, as a result of enemy artillery shelling in the city of Kupiansk, a 73-year-old civilian man was killed," he said.

Additionally, according to the head of the regional administration, another local resident, a 79-year-old, sustained shrapnel wounds and was hospitalized.

"Windows and fences in residential buildings have been destroyed. Law enforcement is on the scene," Syniehubov added.

Shelling of Kupiansk

Russian forces occupied Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region in February 2022 during the large-scale invasion of Ukraine. Serious battles ensued later for control of the city. The liberation of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region was announced in early September 2022 when the Ukrainian Armed Forces expelled the enemy from the left-bank part of the city. Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi was also liberated later that month.

Since then, Russian forces have not ceased shelling these towns. For instance, in early November, Kupiansk-Vuzlovyy came under fire, resulting in the death of a man.

Despite this, Russia continues its attempts to regain control of the city. Just yesterday, it was reported that occupiers continue to advance on Kupiansk, Lyman, and Bakhmut directions. Specifically, they are attempting to capture the village of Sinkivka in an effort to block Kupiansk.
