Russia has experienced a major disruption in the operation of many services, websites, and online platforms following a drone attack on a Yandex data center, according to Meduza.

In the city of Sasovo, Ryazan region, a fire broke out at a Yandex company data center as a result of an attack by Ukrainian drones. No people were injured in the incident, but the facility has completely ceased operations.

The company warned of possible problems with access to its services. Users are already reporting glitches in the operation of the Yandex Cloud platform, as well as Yandex.Mail, Yandex.Disk, Yandex.Documents, Yandex.Pay, and Yandex.Market.

Furthermore, the websites of Vedomosti, RIA Novosti, Kommersant, Vesti, Interfax, and RBC Russia are not loading.

Consequences for business and the market

The attack on the data center has disrupted the operation of other Russian resources as well. Glitches have been recorded on the websites of Cian, Russian Railways (RZD), regional administrations, the cryptocurrency exchange Rapira, and in the services of Astral and 1C.

In addition, problems have arisen in the corporate systems of T-Bank, Ozon, and Wildberries. Failures are also being reported in the operation of Avito, Ivi, and other services.

Amid the incident, Yandex shares on the Moscow Exchange fell by more than 3%.

Strike on supercomputers

The complex in Sasovo houses two of the company's three supercomputers used for training neural networks - Lyapunov and Chervonenkis.

The latter is Yandex's most powerful supercomputer, which ranked 19th in the global Top 500 list in 2021 but later fell into the second hundred due to infrastructure update issues under the pressure of sanctions.

Yandex has not yet reported on the current status or level of damage to the supercomputers following the strike.

Today, October 8, a Yandex data center caught fire in the Ryazan region of Russia as a result of a drone attack.

Footage published online shows a strong fire breaking out inside the building. Smoke was visible from several kilometers away.
