Russian man sentenced to 14 years for posting photos of military graves

The Yaroslavl Regional Court sentenced 48-year-old local resident Nikolai Shcherbakov to 14 years in a maximum-security penal colony for photographing military graves in a cemetery. Investigators charged the man with treason, according to Meduza.
The court's press service stated that since October 2024, Shcherbakov had systematically visited the memorial cemetery, where he covertly photographed and filmed the burial sites of military personnel.
According to investigators, he transmitted this information to representatives of Ukrainian special services.
The edition 7×7 notes that this is the first known case of a treason conviction specifically for filming military graves.
The case against the Yaroslavl resident became known in early August. At that time, Mediazona editor Dmitry Treschanin reported that detentions of people for photographing graves had become more frequent in Russia - some of them were also charged with treason.
After detention, security forces in several regions forced residents to apologize on camera.
Russia has already sentenced three teenagers from temporarily occupied Melitopol - the young men were accused of terrorism and given sentences ranging from 7 to 8.5 years in prison.
