The government of Latvia has extended the current restrictions on the entry of Russian citizens into the country for another year, reports Delfi.

As noted, the current restrictions will expire at the beginning of March. In this regard, the Latvian government decided to extend them until March 4, 2025.

This resolution provides for restrictions on the entry of citizens of the Russian Federation who wish to cross the external border of the European Union for tourist and entertainment purposes.

Currently, Russians can only obtain visas for entry under exceptional circumstances:

  • upon the request of family members of Latvian or other EU citizens and Russians with a residence permit in Latvia

  • "for humanitarian reasons" in case of illness or death of a close relative, threat to oneself, or participation in a court hearing in Latvia

Restrictions on entry for Russians into Latvia

Entry restrictions for citizens of the Russian Federation were introduced in Latvia on September 9, 2022. According to the order of the country's government, the issuance of visas to Russians is also limited.

In addition, in January of this year, Latvian authorities sent letters to about a thousand Russians living in the country with a demand to leave the country within two weeks. They can also adjust their stay status in accordance with current laws.
