Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 5
As of 4 p.m., January 5, 106 battles took place at the front. Almost half of them took place in Russia's Kursk region, General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reports.
Russia's shelling
Today, the areas near the border settlements of the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, such as Porozok, Karpovychi, Hati, Bila Bereza, Druzhba, Bachivsk, Korenok, Tymofiivka, Starikove, Petrushivka and Pokrovka, were hit by cannon artillery fire. In addition, the Russian army launched three guided aerial bombs on Mala Rybytsia and unguided aerial missiles on Hremyachka.
In the Kharkiv direction, Russians launched an air strike with unguided aerial missiles in the area of Okhrimivka.
Situation in Kursk region and other frontline areas
As of now, 42 combat engagements have taken place in the Kursk region, 12 of which are still ongoing.
In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian troops are repelling an enemy attack near Zahryzove, and one attack has already been repelled.
In the Lyman direction, the invading army, supported by attack aircraft, carried out six assault and offensive actions near Nadiia, Tverdokhlibove, Zarichne, Novosergiivka, and Pershotravneve, with four more combat engagements ongoing.
One unsuccessful Russian attack took place in the Siversk direction today.
Ukrainian defenders are repelling the Russian troops' assault in the Kramatorsk direction near Chasiv Yar, two attacks have already been repelled.
Ukrainian Defense Forces units repelled three attacks near Toretsk, Shcherbynivka, and Krymske in the Toretsk direction, two of the engagements are still ongoing.
In the Pokrovsk direction, since the beginning of the day, the Russian military has made 36 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from their positions near the settlements of Yelyzavetivka, Vozdvyzhenka, Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Novyi Trud, Pishchane, Solone, Novovasylivka, Novoyelyzavetivka and Yasenove. The defense forces are holding back the onslaught and repelled 15 enemy attacks, 16 combat engagements are still ongoing. The enemy's losses are being clarified.
In the Kurakhove direction, the invaders conducted 18 attacks near Slovianka, Petropavlivka, Kurakhove, and Dachne, and the fighting continued.
Six times Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks in the Vremivka direction near Yantarne, Novyi Komar, and in the direction of Kostiantynopil, two of them are still ongoing. The Russian aircraft launched anti-aircraft missile strikes on Andriivka, Ulaklama, Temyrivka, and Kostiantynopil.
In the Kharkiv, Huliaypole, Orikhiv, and Prydniprovskyi directions, the Russian military did not conduct active operations at this time of day but is shelling the positions of our troops and civilian infrastructure.
Fights in the Kursk region
Today there were reports that the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked Russian soldiers in the Kursk region on several fronts. For their part, Russian military correspondents are claiming a new offensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which is allegedly aimed at seizing the Kursk nuclear power plant.
