Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of May 5

Russian attacks

Overall, the enemy launched 5 missile strikes and 69 aerial attacks, conducted 74 shelling incidents with rocket artillery on the positions of our troops and civilian settlements. Unfortunately, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population due to Russian terrorist attacks. Private and multi-storey houses, as well as civilian infrastructure objects, have been destroyed and damaged.

During the night, Russian occupiers once again attacked Ukraine, using 24 UAVs of the Shahed type. With the efforts and means of Ukraine's air defense, 23 of these UAVs were destroyed.

During the past day, populated areas were subjected to aerial attacks in:

• Krasnyi Khutir, the Chernihiv region;
• Luhivka, the Sumy region;
• Kharkiv, Slobozhanske, Vesele, Cherkaski Tyshky, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka of the Kharkiv region;
• Verkhniokamianske, Spirne, Klishchiivka, Novosadove, Druzhba, Tarasivka, Novooleksandrivka, Prohres, Yevhenivka, Novoselivka Persha, Umanske, Karlivka, Heorhiivka, Kostiantynivka, Vodiane, Urozhaine, Staromaiorske, the Donetsk region;
• Orikhiv, Preobrazhenka, the Zaporizhzhia region;
• Beryslav, Sadove, and Krynky, the Kherson region.

More than 110 populated areas in the Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions were under artillery fire.

Frontline situation

In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains relatively unchanged.

In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains military presence in border areas, conducts sabotage activities to prevent the transfer of our troops to threatening directions.

In the Kupiansk direction, our soldiers repelled 12 attacks in the areas of the settlements Synkivka, Pishchane, Kyslivka in the Kharkiv region; Stelmakhivka, Berestove in the Luhansk region.

In the Lyman direction, the enemy attacked the positions of our defenders 9 times in the areas of Serebrianske Forestry in the Luhansk region, as well as near settlement Terny in the Donetsk region.

In the Bakhmut direction, our soldiers repelled 12 attacks in the areas of the settlements of Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region; Spirne, Rozdolivka, Novyi, Klishchiivka, and south of Ivanivske in the Donetsk region.

In the Avdiivka direction, our defenders repelled 20 attacks in the areas of the settlements of Novooleksandrivka, Sokil, Novopokrovske, Umanske in the Donetsk region.

In the Novopavlivka direction, the Defense Forces continued to restrain the enemy in the areas of the settlements of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Paraskoviivka, Vodiane and Urozhaine in the Donetsk region, where the enemy attempted 15 times to break through the defense of our troops.

In the Orikhiv direction, the enemy attacked the positions of our defenders 5 times near the settlements of Novodarivka and Staromaiorske in the Donetsk region and Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region.

In the Kherson direction, the enemy is not giving up its intention to dislodge our units from the bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro River. During the past day, the enemy conducted 10 unsuccessful attacks on the positions of our troops.

Enemy losses

During the day, the Defense Forces' aviation struck 7 personnel concentration areas, 3 command points, 3 anti-aircraft missile complexes, and 1 enemy ammunition depot. Additionally, 1 guided aviation missile Kh-59/69 was destroyed by Ukrainian air defense forces.

Rocket forces units targeted 1 command point, 1 personnel concentration area, 1 radar station, and 1 other important enemy target.

It is worth noting, according to ISW data, that Defense Forces have destroyed a lot of Russian equipment near Vuhledar, but invaders have advanced on the Avdiivka direction.

Armed forces are withdrawing in Donetsk region to buy time until Western assistance arrives.

Meanwhile, the enemy continues to ruthlessly shell Kharkiv.
