Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 2

In Ukraine, 64 combat engagements took place in the frontline over the last day. Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold back the enemy, who is trying to encircle Avdiivka, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian attacks
In total, the enemy launched 1 missile and 113 air strikes, fired 84 missile attacks from multiple launch rocket systems at the positions of our troops and populated areas. Unfortunately, Russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. Private residential, other civilian, and industrial infrastructure was destroyed and damaged.
At night, Russian occupants attacked Ukraine once again, using 35 Shahed-136/131 UAVs. Air defense destroyed all enemy Shaheds.
Air strikes were carried out in: Korenek in the Sumy region; Petropavlivka, Kucherivka, Cherneshchyna in the Kharkiv region; Serebryanske forestry in the Luhansk region; Spirne, Terny, Novobakhmutivka, Avdiivka, Novomykhailivka, Maryinka, Georgiivka, Staromayorske, Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk region; Novodarivka in Zaporizhzhia region.
About 110 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions came under artillery fire.
Situation at the frontlines
The operational situation in the Volyn and Polissia directions remains without significant changes.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts active sabotage activities to prevent the deployment of our troops to threatened areas, and increases the density of minefields along the state border in the Belgorod region.
In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 7 attacks near Synkivka and east of Petropavlivka in the Kharkiv region, where the enemy unsuccessfully tried to break through the defense of our troops.
In the Lyman direction, the enemy did not conduct any offensive (assault) actions.
In the Bakhmut direction, our soldiers repelled 10 enemy attacks in the areas of Bohdanivka, Klishchiivka, and Andriivka in the Donetsk region.
In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian defenders continue to hold back the enemy, who keeps trying to encircle Avdiivka. Our soldiers are steadfastly holding the line, inflicting significant losses on the invaders. Thus, the Defense Forces repelled 4 enemy attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, and Avdiivka, and another 19 attacks in the areas of Pervomaiske and Nevelske in the Donetsk region over the past day.
In the Maryinka and Shakhtarsk directions, the occupants did not conduct offensive (assault) actions.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the Defense Forces repelled three enemy attacks near Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia region.
In the Kherson direction, the Defense Forces continue to expand the bridgehead. Despite significant losses, the enemy continues to try to drive our units from their positions. Thus, the enemy made 19 unsuccessful assault actions over the past day.
Enemy losses
Over the past day, our aviation struck 13 areas where enemy personnel were concentrated.
Missile troops hit an area of concentration of personnel, weapons, and military equipment, 6 artillery systems, 3 air defense systems, and an enemy control center.
