Russia’s goal is to derail OSCE: Estonia on Malta's Chairmanship in oganization
Russia's goal is to halt the work of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe), but Estonia and other countries promise not to let it implement these plans, states Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna.
He commented on the Russian blocking of the vote for Estonia's chairmanship of the OSCE and the appointment of Malta to this role.
"However, since our candidacy is conclusively blocked, we are not opposing the alternative proposal by North Macedonia. Russia’s goal is to derail OSCE but we will not give them a chance to destroy the organisation," emphasized Tsahkna.
The appointment of the new OSCE Chairperson
This week the Russian Federation, along with Belarus, vetoed the approval of Estonia as the next chair of the OSCE in 2024.
Afterward, Malta was proposed for the role, which currently maintains neutrality regarding the war in Ukraine, although it has condemned Russian aggression and joined European sanctions. However, Russia also blocked this proposal, as reported in the media.
