A woman died in Ukraine's Chernihiv after cosmetic procedures at a private clinic. Such cases can occur due to negligence by cosmetologists, underestimated risks, or overlooked contraindications.

Ukrainian dermatologist Olha Tarnavska and plastic surgeon Dmytro Slosser explained which actions by cosmetologists should raise concern during a consultation.

Which cosmetologists to avoid

The main red flags of risky cosmetologists, according to dermatologist Olha Tarnavska, include:

  • Offering injections without a consultation and medical history review

  • Working without gloves or in an unclean environment

  • Drawing the product into a syringe out of your sight (so you can’t check the expiration date or name)

  • Refusing to show a diploma of higher medical education

It is important that the doctor not only collects a full medical history (chronic illnesses and allergies) but also asks about the procedures the patient has had before. This is essential, as some products are incompatible.

“A cosmetologist must determine whether you have real indications for the procedure, not just ‘I want it like on Instagram,’” added Tarnavska.

What to ask the doctor

The dermatologist also listed essential questions to ask your cosmetologist during a visit:

  • Do you have higher medical education, and in which specialty?

  • Please show the certificate of compliance for this product

  • What are the possible complications, and how would we treat them if they occur?

  • Will you give me the sticker from the product box (injection passport)?

Plastic surgeon Dmytro Slosser, with over 25 years of experience, said that lab tests and their careful analysis are mandatory. Most complications happen due to underestimated risks or overlooked contraindications.

“Prevention is always more important than treating the consequences. You should also be cautious of promises of quick results without risks or rehabilitation,” he noted.
