Experts have identified a powerful plant-based alternative that provides the body with ideal building material and offers even more benefits than traditional meat.
The star of a healthy diet is edamame — young soybeans traditionally boiled or steamed in their pods. This popular Japanese dish has proven to be a true protein powerhouse.
Just one cup of edamame contains about 18 grams of high-quality protein. Its key advantage is that it is considered a complete protein.
This means the beans provide all nine essential amino acids in sufficient amounts. The human body cannot produce these acids on its own, so they must come from food.
One serving covers nearly half of the daily protein needs for an average sedentary woman and about one-third for a man.
Dr. Allison Petersen from UW Health Medical Center notes that she recommends edamame to almost all her patients. According to her, the product supports proper tissue growth, repair, and metabolic function.
Why beans outperform poultry
Edamame significantly surpasses chicken in several ways. First, beans are an excellent source of fiber, which is essential for healthy digestion. One cup (about 160 grams and 224 calories) contains around 8 grams of fiber, which chicken has none of.
Additionally, it provides 14 grams of carbohydrates for slow energy release and 12 grams of healthy fats, including essential omega-3 fatty acids.
