Possible cover-up of Ukraine's west by Patriot system in Poland: Foreign Minister explains
Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba believes that a scenario in which Patriot air defense systems deployed in Poland would cover the western regions of Ukraine is realistic.
Kuleba was asked whether the scenario of using American air defense systems in Poland to cover the skies over western Ukraine is possible.
"Now it is realistic. In fact, this would protect NATO countries from strikes of drones or missiles on their territory," the minister replied.
Kuleba noted that very different solutions are currently being considered during negotiations with partners who could share air defense systems with Ukraine.
"When we are sitting behind closed doors, I tell all our partners: dear friends, whatever you want to lease, let's lease, if you want it to cover your border, it will cover your border, but give it to us," the Foreign Minister said.
Strengthening Ukraine's Air Defense
Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine has been working to strengthen its air defense. However, the need for air defense has become more acute after the resumption of Russian strikes on energy facilities.
On Saturday, April 13, Germany announced the transfer of an additional Patriot system to Ukraine. In addition, negotiations are underway to receive an additional IRIS-T system.
However, 25 Patriot systems are needed to completely block Ukraine's skies from Russian drones and missiles, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously stated. Recently, Kuleba said that Ukraine has already found 100 free Patriot systems in the world, but first wants to get 7 of them.
Ukraine's priority is not only Patriot, but also Samp-T systems, which are also capable of shooting down ballistic missiles. As of today, Ukraine is negotiating to receive two Patriot batteries and one Samp-T battery.
