Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz makes it clear that Warsaw is seeking to station French and US nuclear weapons in the country.
He emphasizes that strengthening military cooperation with the US is not just a matter of a permanent US military presence in Poland.
According to him, Warsaw also seeks to participate in a nuclear cooperation program that allows certain NATO countries to take part in the nuclear deterrence system.
In addition, Poland seeks to develop cooperation with France, which offers its European partners a greater share in its nuclear deterrence system.
Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz states that US participation in the nuclear cooperation program does not preclude the establishment of European relations with France.
He notes that Poland intends to gradually increase its commitments regarding nuclear deterrence. However, the Minister does not specify a timeline for making concrete decisions, emphasizing that this would require consultations with allies.
What else is important to know
In August, Poland stated that it had no intention of deploying US nuclear warheads on its territory. At the same time, Warsaw was negotiating with the US to strengthen the permanent military presence of American forces in the country.
In July, Poland and France held their first meeting on nuclear cooperation.
