Poland condemns US tariffs as unprecedented in a century

Poland reacted sharply to the new US tariffs. They have been compared to events that have not had analogues in the last 100 years, according to The Guardian.
Deputy Minister of Economy of Poland Michał Baranowski compared the new tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration to the events that led to the Great Depression.
He said that the latest changes in tariffs have no analogues in the last 100 years and expressed concern about the possible economic consequences.
He emphasized that there have been "no tariffs like we have seen the last past week … for the last 100 years.”
Baranowski noted that similar tariffs caused a significant escalation in the 1930s, leading to political extremism and international conflicts.
He emphasized that while the EU regrets these innovations, “it is very clear there will be no winners in this confrontation.”
Baranowski called for serious negotiations with the US, emphasizing the importance of transatlantic economic relations for the global economy.
Trump's new tariffs
On April 2, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing duties on imports of goods from more than 180 countries. According to the document, reciprocal duties ranging from 11% to 48% will be imposed on certain countries, while the rest will be subject to a “base” rate of 10%.
On April 4, it became known that China announced the introduction of 34% duties on imported American goods in addition to the existing tariffs. They will take effect on April 10.
At the same time, in response to the US duties, Canada imposed a 25% duty on cars imported from the US.
Meanwhile, the UK has released a list of 8,000 US goods that may be subject to tariffs in response to US President Donald Trump's policy.
And French President Emanuel Macron called for a halt to French investment in the United States.
