The iconic Pepsi brand has come a long way from being a simple pharmacy syrup in 1898 to becoming one of the world's biggest beverage brands. While Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and the popular Pepsi Max line share the same logo, they differ significantly in their ingredients, calorie content, and even caffeine levels.

The Daily Express explains the difference between these soft drinks.

Comparing the calorie content

For people who closely monitor calories, the differences between these drinks are significant.

A standard serving of classic Pepsi contains 15 grams of sugar, providing 61 calories. In contrast, Diet Pepsi and Pepsi Max are designed for those looking to reduce calorie intake and maintain their weight.

Both contain no sugar and provide zero calories. Experts say that artificial sweeteners are considered safe when consumed in moderation and can help significantly reduce overall sugar intake.

The surprising truth about caffeine

Many consumers may be surprised by the caffeine content of these drinks.

A standard can of classic Pepsi contains about 38 milligrams of caffeine.

Diet Pepsi contains slightly less caffeine, making it a better option for those trying to limit their caffeine intake.

The real standout is Pepsi Max, which contains 69 milligrams of caffeine per serving—nearly twice as much as classic Pepsi—offering a much stronger energy boost.

How the sugar-free versions taste different

Food industry experts explain that the sugar-free versions are designed to appeal to different taste preferences.

Diet Pepsi has a lighter, drier, and cleaner flavor, achieved through the use of aspartame and carefully selected natural flavorings.

Pepsi Max takes a different approach. It uses a blend of sweeteners, including acesulfame potassium, to create a bolder, richer taste that closely mimics the flavor of classic full-sugar Pepsi without the sugar and with less risk to dental health.
