A deficiency of vitamins and minerals can occur due to poor nutrition, stress, and lack of sleep. However, there are basic symptoms in the body that indicate disruptions and require additional vitamin intake, Kateryna Tolstiakova, endocrinologist, dietitian, and author of the book "Stress Through Life – My Mood" says in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

Signs of deficiencies

According to the dietitian, each micronutrient can cause different symptoms in the body. However, many people make the mistake of turning to the internet rather than a doctor when they experience symptoms.

"Previously, everyone was treated by Dr Google, now everyone is treated by ChatGPT," said Kateryna.

It is important to understand that if your body's condition has changed and started to differ from what it was like last week, you should consult a doctor.

Tolstiakova listed the clear signs of vitamin deficiencies:

  • Chronic fatigue.
  • Difficulty waking up in the morning.
  • Bad mood.
  • Depressive state.
  • Hair loss, brittle and sparse hair.
  • Skin rashes.
  • Restless leg syndrome.
  • Irregular menstrual cycle.
  • Libido problems.

Even if you start taking vitamins to improve hair condition, the results will be visible only after two months. In particular, you need to wait for the deficiencies to form a new follicle and bring the hair condition back to normal.

The expert explained that a vitamin D deficiency can lead to allergic reactions. Research also indicates that such a deficiency can result in depression, allergic diseases, and even asthma.

"So, when we talk about the skin, we should definitely look at vitamins D, C, zinc, selenium, iron, and B vitamins. Each micronutrient has its own set of symptoms," the endocrinologist added.

Can you practice self-treatment?

The specialist noted that self-treatment is possible. According to her, medicine is not an exact science and cannot be protocol-driven. This is because every body is unique and everyone's genetics are different.

"When a doctor gains knowledge of biochemistry and looks at how the body works, there are definitely similar symptoms. Biochemistry, anatomy, and physiology are basic disciplines, and they work the same way, but genetics are different in everyone, and enzyme activity will be different. The absorption of substances and deficiencies are different in each person," she said.

Therefore, one treatment cannot be suitable for all people. It's important to engage in self-education, thoroughly study your body, take tests, and then support yourself preventively.
