Carrots aren’t the only food that supports vision. In addition to beta-carotene, your eyes need lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, which can be found in other accessible foods, according to Eating Well.

Pistachios

Increased intake of lutein and zeaxanthin is associated with a reduced risk of cataracts and progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration affects central vision and is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.

Sweet potatoes

This vegetable is a rich source of vitamin A, an essential nutrient for eye health. One medium sweet potato provides more than 100% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin A.

Vitamin A is crucial for maintaining proper eye function. It helps keep eyes moist and provides pigments that prevent night blindness. A deficiency can cause dryness and difficulty seeing in low light.

Spinach

Dark leafy greens, such as spinach, are well-known for eye health. Spinach is rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that accumulate in the macula of the eye.

The macula is part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed central vision. Lutein and zeaxanthin act as a shield for this vital part.

These compounds function as antioxidants and natural blue-light filters, helping reduce oxidative stress and maintain visual acuity.

Add a handful of fresh spinach to your morning smoothie or scrambled eggs. Use it as a base for salads or sauté with garlic and olive oil for a simple, nutritious side.

Eggs

Egg yolks are one of the best sources of lutein and zeaxanthin. These nutrients are especially effective due to the way the body absorbs them.

Because they are fat-soluble and yolks naturally contain fat, they are absorbed particularly well. This allows the body to use these compounds efficiently to support the health of the retina and macula.

Additional tips to improve eyesight

Diet is important for eye health, but not the only factor. Follow these additional recommendations to protect your vision for years to come:

  • Get comprehensive eye exams – the only way to detect common eye diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and early-stage macular degeneration, often before symptoms appear.

  • Wear protective glasses – they help prevent injuries during sports, work, or other risky activities.

  • Sunglasses – choose sunglasses that block 99–100% of UV-A and UV-B radiation.

  • Give your eyes a break – follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 meters away for 20 seconds. This is especially useful if you spend long hours in front of screens.
