Norwegian university detaining Russian agent acknowledges presence of other spies
The rector of the University of Tromsø in Norway, Dag Rune Olsen, does not rule out the possibility that spies working in the interests of the Russian Federation may be enrolled at the institution, reports iTromsø.
Olsen made this statement in the context of the arrest of a university associate professor, who was revealed to be a personnel officer of the Russian GRU, Mikhail Mikushin.
The rector of the University of Tromsø mentioned that the university is a place where individuals who will hold key positions in the future are often found. Consequently, it becomes particularly interesting for those who engage in unlawful activities.
He also revealed that in recent years, the institution has experienced cyber attacks, prompting an enhancement of security measures.
Arrest of Russian GRU agent at the University of Tromsø
On October 24, 2022, Norwegian police apprehended a Russian spy operating within the University of Tromsø under a fabricated identity. Investigators determined that the suspect possessed forged documents in the name of a Brazilian citizen, although, in reality, he was an agent of Russian intelligence.
Mikhail Mikushin has been in custody for over a year under the Norwegian Police Security Service (PSS), facing charges related to espionage activities.
Russian spies in Norway
In October 2023, Russian intelligence services attempted to recruit a resident of Norway. The individual was tasked with photographing military facilities in the northern part of the country and transmitting the images to the Kremlin.
On April 13 of the previous year, Norway declared 15 Russian diplomats, who were active intelligence officers, persona non grata and expelled them from the country.
Additionally, Russian diplomats were found attempting radio reconnaissance activities within the country.
