Ukraine and Russia today carried out another stage of a prisoner exchange. This is already the ninth exchange under the previous agreements reached in Istanbul, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reports.

"Today, the ninth stage of the exchange agreed upon in Istanbul took place," Zelenskyy wrote.

According to the Ukrainian President, seriously ill and severely wounded defenders are returning home today.

Through all the stages of the latest Istanbul agreements, more than 1,000 of our people have been brought back.

"The warriors returning today defended Ukraine on various fronts. A significant number had been in captivity for more than three years. All of them will receive the necessary support and medical care," the President stated.

Previous exchanges

During the first round of negotiations in Istanbul, which took place in May of this year, Ukraine and Russia agreed on a large-scale prisoner exchange in the 1,000 for 1,000 format.

This agreement was carried out in three stages - from May 23 to 25. It became one of the largest exchanges since the beginning of the full-scale war.

Already on June 2, during the second round of negotiations in Türkiye, the sides reached a new agreement - on exchanging all severely wounded, seriously ill, as well as prisoners of war aged 18 to 25.

Under these agreements, eight exchanges have already taken place since the beginning of June - on the 9th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 19th, 20th, and 26th of the month, as well as on July 4.
