Wet wipes seem like a convenient way to quickly clean your shoes, but in reality, they can do more harm than good. Most of these wipes can dry out or damage the shoe material, according to Martha Stewart.

What’s in wet wipes

When you spot a stain on your white sneakers before going outside, it’s tempting to just wipe it off with a wet wipe.

However, people don’t realize that wet wipes are not designed for sneaker care. They contain ingredients that clean surfaces or skin effectively, but the same chemicals can break down the materials your shoes are made of.

Most wet wipes contain alcohol, surfactants, fragrances, and preservatives. These ingredients are meant to quickly dissolve dirt and kill bacteria, but they can damage shoe materials, especially natural ones like leather, and weaken adhesives.

What can happen

  • Natural oils are removed. Leather shoes are especially vulnerable to damage from wet wiping. The material depends on natural oils to stay flexible and resilient. Alcohol and surfactants in wipes remove these oils, leaving the leather stiff and prone to cracking.
  • Glue deteriorates. Even rubber and synthetic components can suffer from repeated wiping, as chemicals in wet wipes gradually weaken adhesives. You might notice soles separating from the upper part or decorative elements peeling off.
  • Shoes get dirty faster. Beyond material damage, cleaning agents in wet wipes can leave residues. The leftover film attracts dust and dirt, which means sneakers need cleaning again sooner.

Best ways to clean shoes

Proper sneaker cleaning doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. A microfiber cloth dampened with plain water and a small amount of mild soap is enough for most materials.

For mesh areas, a soft-bristled brush works well. It lifts dirt between fibers without damaging them. For convenience, safer options are sneaker cleaning wipes specifically designed for shoes.

These do not contain harsh chemicals found in regular wet wipes and won’t strip protective coatings.
