Netherlands to introduce border control in December
The Netherlands temporarily introduces border controls to combat illegal migration. The decision on additional checks on land borders with neighboring countries will take effect on December 9, Euronews reports.
This step was taken following the example of Germany, which had already introduced border checks in September.
Dutch Minister of Migration Marjolein Faber said that the decision was in line with EU requirements, according to which member states have the right to temporarily impose border controls in case of a serious threat to internal security. At the same time, countries must notify Brussels in advance of any restrictions on freedom of movement.
According to Faber, tighter controls will help the Netherlands fight illegal migration and migrant smuggling.
Geert Wilders, leader of the anti-immigration PVV party, supported the measure and noted that his party is fulfilling its promises. Wilders has long been in favor of closing the Dutch borders and reducing the migration flow. However, the introduction of the control does not imply additional funding for the national police; the checks will be carried out within existing resources.
Currently, people entering Germany from France and other neighboring countries are checked by law enforcement agencies.
New rules at Polish border
As of November 1, Poland introduced mandatory electronic registration for all foreign carriers, regardless of the type of cargo being transported. Now truck drivers are required to carry their RMPD registration number from the SENT system or a document that replaces it at all times.
Carriers face serious fines for violations - up to PLN 12,000.
