More than 60 migrants drown in Libya shipwreck
About 61 migrants, including women and children, drowned in a shipwreck off the coast of Libya, reports CNN.
As reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) office, the vessel departed from the coastal town of Zuwara, located about 60 km from the border with Tunisia. Approximately 86 people were on board.
“The central Mediterranean continues to be one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes,” the UN agency said in the post.
Tragedies involving migrants
Libya serves as a crucial transit point on the central Mediterranean route. Tens of thousands of people attempt to cross the Libyan border each year, and sea tragedies are not uncommon. Most are fleeing conflict in search of a better life.
According to the UN data, just this year, over 2,500 people have died or gone missing in the Central Mediterranean, with the likelihood of high figures in other parts of the world. For instance, earlier this year, a boat carrying illegal migrants sank near the southern coast of Italy, resulting in the loss of at least 63 lives, including 12 children.
