The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by Elon Musk will "end" at a certain point, as US President Donald Trump stated, according to CNN.

The US President explained that the billionaire will only be available to him as a special government employee for 130 days. He also added that Musk would eventually want to return to his company.

“He’s got a big company to run, and so at some point, he’s going to be going back,” Trump said of the Tesla and SpaceX CEO. “I’d keep him as long as I can keep him. He’s a very talented guy, you know, I love very smart people, and he’s very smart, and he’s done a good job.”

When asked whether DOGE would continue its operations in Musk's absence, Trump responded that, in his opinion, heads of federal agencies "have learned a lot" about how to do the job independently, and some might want to keep DOGE employees on board.

“You know, at a certain point, I think it will end,” Trump said. “There’ll be a point at which the secretaries will be able to do this work and do it very, you know, as we say, with the scalpel, and that’s what we want.”

Musk’s role in DOGE

In 2024, the well-known entrepreneur Elon Musk actively supported Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, including financial contributions, investing millions of dollars. After the Republicans’ victory, Musk was appointed to lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency. The goal of DOGE was to conduct audits, reduce the federal government, and cut budgetary expenses.

In mid-March, US Vice President J.D. Vance publicly commented on Musk’s work and the performance of his department. According to the country’s second-highest official, the billionaire had made several mistakes.
