Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu called on the Indian government to withdraw its troops from the islands by March 15, according to Sun Online.
"Indian troops cannot stay in Sri Lanka. This is the policy of President Dr. Muizzu, this is the policy of the government," said Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Assistant to the Presidential Administration of the Maldives for Public Policy.
There are 88 Indian military personnel in Sri Lanka.
The Maldives and India have formed a joint high-level group to discuss the withdrawal of Indian troops.
Nazim said that the President has included the withdrawal of Indian troops from Sri Lanka by March 15 this year on the agenda of today's meeting.
"So the discussions will continue until tonight," he said.
