In mid-February, increased geomagnetic activity is expected. According to monitoring laboratories, magnetic storms of varying intensity may occur from February 13 to 16. People sensitive to weather changes, as well as those with cardiovascular conditions, should pay special attention to their well-being.
NOAA Space Weather reports when geomagnetic activity is expected to rise and how to protect your health on dangerous days.
Magnetic storm forecast by day
-
February 13, Friday: Moderate increase in solar activity is expected, possibly leading to a weak magnetic storm.
-
February 14, Saturday: Activity may intensify toward the evening. Weather-sensitive individuals may experience headaches, weakness, or mood swings.
-
February 15, Sunday: Moderate magnetic storm with possible increase in geomagnetic activity after 6 p.m., reaching Kp 4–5.
-
February 16, Monday: The magnetic storm will last almost the entire day, but activity will remain moderate in the afternoon, not exceeding Kp 4.
What the K-index level means
The strength of a magnetic storm is measured by the planetary K-index:
-
1–3 – calm magnetosphere
-
4 – excited state (moderate magnetic storm)
-
5 and above – magnetic storm
-
7–8 – strong storm
-
9 – powerful geomagnetic storm
Even moderate storms can affect well-being, especially if the body is weakened by stress or lack of sleep.
Who is most affected by magnetic storms
Those who most often react to changes in the magnetic field include:
-
People with cardiovascular diseases
-
Hypertensive and hypotensive individuals
-
Weather-sensitive people
-
Elderly individuals
-
Those with sleep problems or chronic fatigue
-
People under prolonged stress
How magnetic storms affect well-being
During geomagnetic disturbances, people most often report:
-
Headaches
-
Migraines
-
Sleepiness or insomnia
-
Blood pressure fluctuations
-
Irritability
-
Decreased concentration
-
Fatigue
How to ease symptoms during geomagnetic activity
From February 13 to 16, doctors recommend:
-
Getting enough rest and sleep
-
Drinking plenty of water
-
Limiting caffeine and alcohol
-
Avoiding overwork and stress
-
Spending more time outdoors
-
