Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg will abdicate the throne in favor of his son, Crown Prince Guillaume, after 25 years on the throne, marking the start of a new chapter in the country’s monarchy, according to AP.

Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg has announced his abdication after 25 years on the throne. The crown will pass to his eldest son, Crown Prince Guillaume, marking the beginning of a new era for one of Europe’s oldest monarchies.

Henri and his wife, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, have primarily served ceremonial roles while the government managed the nation’s economic and political affairs. One of the toughest challenges during his reign was the 2008 financial crisis, the biggest shock to Luxembourg’s economy since the 1970s.

The 70-year-old monarch, educated in France, Switzerland, and Belgium, is known for his discretion and strong sense of duty. Over the years, he has represented Luxembourg on the international stage, balancing royal tradition with the realities of modern governance.

The formal transfer of power to Crown Prince Guillaume will take place at a special ceremony symbolizing the continuity of the Grand Duchy’s royal dynasty. Guillaume has already taken on a growing public role, attending official functions and representing Luxembourg abroad in preparation for his reign.

Analysts note that Henri’s abdication is one of the rare instances of a peaceful royal transition in Europe in the 21st century — a move that underscores both generational change and the monarchy’s enduring stability.

"This is a historic moment for Luxembourg, a symbol of generational renewal and continued national stability," said experts in European politics.

Luxembourg remains one of the world’s wealthiest nations by GDP per capita, hosting major banking, IT, and corporate headquarters. Despite its small size, it boasts one of the highest standards of living globally.
