The self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, stated that Belarusian peacekeepers could supposedly ensure normal relations between Ukraine and Russia. This could be an attempt to improve Lukashenko's image, Ukraine`s Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) reports.

What preceded it

Lukashenko claimed that Belarusian peacekeepers could help establish normal relations between Ukraine and Russia.

The self-proclaimed President of Belarus also said that Minsk does not intend to send a peacekeeping contingent to the front lines, as neither Ukraine nor the West would agree to such a decision.

CCD's reaction

The CCD believes that such statements are an attempt by Lukashenko to create the impression that Belarus is staying neutral in the war.

"The active support of the Russian army by Belarus at the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine made Minsk an accomplice in Russia's armed aggression against our country. Therefore, any statements about 'Belarusian peacekeepers' sound absurd," said Ukraine`s Center for Countering Disinformation.

The Center stated that this "peacekeeping" rhetoric is aimed at improving Lukashenko's image in the eyes of the international community. His statement also aligns with Russian propaganda claims that it is the West and Ukraine, not Russia, who seek to prolong the war.

Sending peacekeepers to Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron proposed the idea of deploying peacekeepers to Ukraine last year, but most EU and NATO countries currently do not support this initiative. Germany is only willing to discuss it with Russia's consent. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the introduction of peacekeepers one of the best ways to force Russia into peace.

Previously, Zelenskyy mentioned the need for 200,000 peacekeepers to ensure stable peace in Ukraine.

According to Ukraine`s President, the number of peacekeepers could be larger or smaller, depending on the size of the Ukrainian army.
