What we know about Centenarian Maria Rosa

Maria Rosa Tassone passed away on October 14, 2024, at 109. She survived two world wars and three pandemics.

Maria was born in Spadola, Italy, on January 25, 1915, just one year after the start of World War I. She stayed in her hometown, where she tended to her garden and prepared meals for her large family.

The great-grandmother attributed her long life to "olive oil and red wine."

The Italian woman had 26 relatives, including children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Until her death, she was the oldest woman in the Italian region of Calabria, with a population of about 1.84 million.

Maria Rosa survived the Spanish flu pandemic, which began in 1918 when she was three years old and ended in 1920. She also endured the SARS outbreak from 2002 to 2004 and the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

Maria Rosa explained her longevity by living quietly and enjoying light meals, often accompanied by a glass of wine.

She also stated that she never smoked cigarettes and avoided any excesses.

When asked for advice on how to live long, she suggested using olive oil, drinking red wine, and avoiding too many sweets.

When Maria Rosa was born, Italy was a monarchy under King Victor Emmanuel III. She witnessed her country become a republic in 1948 and survived the transition to the Second Republic in 1994.

"Today is a sad day for the entire Spadolese community. My grandmother, Maria Rosa Tassone, has returned to the Father’s house at the venerable age of nearly 110. She was the oldest person in Calabria and among the longest-lived in Italy," her grandson Vitantonio Tassone wrote on social media.
