Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas commented on the recent operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region, calling it a significant event that undermines Russia's position and boosts the morale of Ukrainian forces, according to LRT.

"First of all, this is probably an attempt by the Russian authorities to downplay the situation (referring to the Ukrainian military successes, - ed.), but, of course, from a realistic point of view, this is a clear humiliation for Vladimir Putin. The so-called defensive lines were not as they were supposed to be designed, not as they were supposed to be," the minister said.

Kasčiūnas emphasized that Russia's so-called defensive lines turned out to be much weaker than expected.

"Now they have taken as much territory as they managed to gain during last year's counteroffensive, so the numbers are quite impressive," he said.

Kasčiūnas also expressed the opinion that the further development of events will depend on the Ukrainians and military actions. He stressed that the main victory of this operation was the strengthening of morale, which was extremely necessary.

The minister noted that the situation on the front was becoming increasingly difficult, sparking talks about negotiations on Russian terms. However, the successful operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces could significantly strengthen Ukraine's position in potential negotiations.

"The Ukrainians decided to play smart; they are strengthening their positions, and if they manage to retain control over this territory or over the centers of certain territories, this will greatly increase their negotiating power. Therefore, if we discuss any negotiations, the Ukrainians will already be in a stronger position," Kasčiūnas concluded.

At the same time, the minister called the West's reaction to the Ukrainian Armed Forces operation on Russian territory a victory for common sense.

"First of all, it's good that when Ukraine began this northern maneuver, we did not hear discussions from the West about crossing 'red lines,' as there was a risk that such voices would be raised. However, it was clear that, within the framework of their defensive strategy, Ukraine could maneuver and have such opportunities. This is good, joyful news and a victory for common sense, but there are other things that need to be done," he said.

Operation of Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region

On August 6, there was a breakthrough on the border of the Kursk region, which caught the Russian military and authorities unprepared. Reports indicate significant losses of Russian equipment, captured Russian soldiers, including conscripts, and killed military personnel.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine is approaching its strategic goal within the framework of this operation.

It is known that the Russians have begun evacuating residents of the Kursk region, but they are relocating them to occupied settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region, trying to hide them from other Russian citizens. The Kremlin fears that these people might tell the truth about the war and about the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which do not match the image of "Nazis" portrayed by Russian television.

Additionally, Ukraine offered residents of the Kursk region evacuation through humanitarian corridors—either to Ukraine or Russia.
