Latvian navy identifies vessel suspected in Baltic sea cable damage
The National Armed Forces of Latvia have identified a vessel that may be involved in damaging the underwater cable in the Baltic Sea. A patrol ship has been dispatched to the site, according to Delfi.
The Latvian Maritime Operations Center analyzed vessel movements in the area where the cable was damaged and identified two additional vessels that were outside Latvia's territorial waters and exclusive zone.
The Latvian Navy has dispatched a patrol ship to inspect the vessel potentially linked to the incident.
The police have also informed NATO allies, including Sweden, about the event and continue exchanging information regarding the incident.
It should be recalled that on the morning of Sunday, January 26, an underwater fiber optic cable of the "Latvian State Radio and Television Center" (LVRTC) was damaged in the Baltic Sea between Latvia and Sweden.
Later, a statement was made in Lithuania.
It is worth noting that in November of last year, damage to underwater cables in the Baltic Sea was also recorded.
There were earlier assumptions of Russian involvement in these actions. However, a week ago, it was reported that U.S. and European intelligence agencies believe the damage to underwater cables resulted from maritime accidents rather than Russian sabotage.
