Kitchen spot everyone forgets to clean — and it’s the dirtiest one

The space behind the refrigerator in the kitchen is one of the hardest-to-reach areas, so it is usually cleaned less often than open surfaces. As a result, dust, crumbs, and other dirt gradually accumulate there and may go unnoticed during regular cleaning, according to Southern Living.
Why you should clean behind the refrigerator
The only place in the kitchen that almost everyone forgets to clean is the space behind the refrigerator. People regularly wipe countertops, wash dishes, sweep the floor, and keep the sink clean.
Behind the refrigerator, crumbs, dust, pet hair, and sometimes even pieces of packaging or small objects that fall out of sight tend to accumulate.
The main reason is accessibility. The refrigerator is large and heavy, and it is rarely moved unless necessary. In everyday routines, people choose what is obvious and gives immediate visible results.
Often, this area is only remembered during deep cleaning, renovations, or furniture rearrangement.
Don’t forget the top of the refrigerator
Warm air from the refrigerator rises upward, so dust settles faster there. In the kitchen, it also mixes with grease, forming a sticky layer. If too much dust accumulates, it can re-enter the air and settle on food.
In addition, dirty surfaces may attract small pests.
How often to clean:
- Light wipe: about once a week
- Deep cleaning (with detergent): once every 2–4 weeks
If you store items on top of the refrigerator, it is better to use a tray or box — it is easier to remove and clean than wiping the entire surface.
How to slow down dust buildup
Anti-static effect. After cleaning, wipe the surface with a solution of 1 liter of water + 1–2 drops of fabric softener. This reduces dust attraction for 1–2 weeks.
Barrier layer. Place baking paper, cling film, or a thin silicone mat on top. Instead of cleaning the surface, you replace the covering.
Fewer items. The more objects there are, the more dust accumulates between them. One box or tray is better than many small items.
Regular cleaning. It is better to spend 30–60 seconds once a week than to scrub for a long time once a month.
