Every pet owner wants to create the safest and most comfortable environment possible for their furry friend. However, sometimes a deadly threat can be hiding in the most ordinary household items.
Daily Express shares which everyday items can be toxic to cats.
Essential oils
Cat behavior expert Chris, who shares useful tips on TikTok, has warned about five household items that can have tragic consequences.
Many people consider essential oils completely safe because they are natural. However, they can be highly toxic to cats because their bodies lack specific liver enzymes needed to break down plant compounds.
Most dangerous types: tea tree, peppermint and citrus oils.
Hidden sources: scented candles, household cleaning products and air fresheners.
How poisoning occurs: cats can be harmed through direct skin contact, by licking tiny particles from their fur while grooming, or simply by inhaling concentrated vapors from room diffusers.
Hair growth products
Hair loss treatments for humans, especially those containing minoxidil, are extremely dangerous for cats.
Even a microscopic drop or accidental contact with a cat’s exposure to your pillow, hands, or clothing can cause severe heart failure, a critical drop in blood pressure, and pulmonary edema.
The expert emphasizes that if you use such products, your cat should not have access to the bedroom.
Houseplants and flowers
A fresh bouquet or a new potted plant can instantly brighten up an interior, but it can also cause irreversible damage to a pet’s internal organs.
Toxic varieties: lilies, tulips, hydrangeas, daffodils and popular types of indoor palms.
Consequences: from severe irritation of the mouth and mucous membranes to complete organ failure.
Chris advises keeping all plants on high shelves or in rooms that the animal cannot access. Before bringing a new plant into your home, always check how toxic it is to cats.
Pain relief ointments and creams
As with essential oils, cats lack the enzymes (glucuronyltransferases) needed to safely process topical human medications. Since cats constantly groom themselves, any medical cream left on your skin can easily enter their bodies.
The following are particularly dangerous:
- anti-inflammatory gels, such as those containing ibuprofen;
- hormone replacement therapy gels;
- psoriasis creams containing potent forms of vitamin D;
- topical chemotherapy medications, such as fluorouracil.
Even tiny amounts of these substances can cause organ failure or death. Owners should thoroughly wash their hands after applying creams and cover treated areas of skin with clothing when their pet is nearby.
