EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas told leaders of political groups in the European Parliament that the current global situation is so challenging that it might be considered "a good time" to hit the bottle, according to Politico.

The remark was reportedly made during an informal discussion after members of the European Parliament had begun exchanging New Year greetings.

According to two people present at the meeting, Kaja Kallas said she is not a supporter of alcohol but added that the current global developments make one reassess the situation.

International context

According to the publication, the comment was made against the backdrop of heightened international tensions. At the same time, representatives of Greenland and Denmark were holding talks with US Vice President JD Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The discussions focused on statements by US President Donald Trump regarding the possibility of establishing US control over Greenland. The outlet notes that Kallas’s comment came amid active debates on security in the Arctic region and the role of the United States in these processes.

Earlier, Kallas said that in response to Trump’s remarks about risks to Greenland’s security, NATO has sufficient capabilities to address such concerns.

She has also stated that damage to critical undersea cables in the Baltic Sea points to a systemic threat to Europe’s infrastructure since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, stressing the need to strengthen protection measures and thanking Finland for its swift and decisive actions in detaining suspects.
