A few hours after Syrian rebels captured Damascus, Israeli troops began to occupy strategic sites in Syria. This is the first case of border crossing since the end of the Yom Kippur War in 1974, according to The Washington Post.

Israeli officials claim that the actions are defensive and aimed at ensuring the country's security.

In particular, Israeli troops occupied abandoned Syrian military facilities to prevent them from being used by terrorists or other groups against Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the operation was temporary, but the region saw it differently.

Arab states have reportedly sharply criticized Israel's actions, calling its actions an illegal occupation. The Arab League and Egypt warned of a possible escalation of the conflict and called on the international community to intervene.

Situation in Syria

The agency notes that military activity is increasing on the border with Syria: Israeli tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery are ready for further action.

Meanwhile, the situation in Syria itself remains tense - after Bashar al-Assad's escape, the country is in chaos.

The Israeli military continues to search for weapons depots, including chemical weapons and is also strengthening its control over the buffer zone. However, regional experts warn that such actions could trigger a new wave of conflict in the Middle East.

In addition, the Russian military is urgently trying to evacuate its personnel and equipment. One of the Russian bases is currently under siege, as reported by the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine.

The White House also stated that the fall of the Assad regime showed the weakening of not only Russia but also Iran.
