Former Defense Minister Walter Braga Netto was arrested in Brazil. He was preparing a coup d'état, reports Reuters.

Federal police arrested the former minister after the retired general was accused of organizing a coup d'état to overturn the results of the 2022 elections.

Netto also worked as chief of staff to former President Jair Bolsonaro and was his partner in his unsuccessful re-election bid in 2022.

Netto, in turn, denies any involvement in the coup attempt.

Law enforcement officers also searched Braga Netto's residence in Rio de Janeiro and the home of retired Colonel Flavio Botelho Peregrino in Brasilia.

It is also known that Netto will be taken into custody in Rio.

Back in November, federal police accused Braga Netto, along with Bolsonaro, other cabinet members, and former military commanders, of planning a coup d'état to prevent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking office after he won the 2022 elections.

Earlier it became known that Bolsonaro left for the United States after losing the presidential election. A short time later, his supporters stormed the Brazilian Congress calling for military intervention and the resignation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

But last year, Bolsonaro himself announced his intention to return home to lead the opposition to the current government.
