Humanoid robot cries in public: How Yansyn-X2 simulates empathy

The Yansyn-X2 humanoid robot shed a real tear before the audience - an unusual trick was demonstrated at a technology exhibition in Shanghai, according to Engadget.
During the 2026 Inclusion Conference in Shanghai, engineers showcased exceptional interaction with the robot. At the developer's request to shed a tear, the robot released a drop of clear liquid from its eye within seconds.
Engineering emotions and the effect of presence
The Yansyn-X2 was developed by the Chinese company Yanxi Technology from the city of Ningbo.
The robot is based on a three-level technical architecture:
- AI algorithms analyze the context and tone of the conversation.
- Bionic components under medical-grade silicone skin change the facial expression to sadness upon detecting words of sympathy or sorrow.
- A separate microfluidic system releases artificial tears from the corners of the eyes.
Currently, the Yansyn-X2 can turn its head, track people, and gesture. In future versions, servo motors are planned to be replaced by bionic muscles for smoother facial expressions.
Rapid development of robotics
The Yansyn-X2 is part of the general trend in humanoid development. Other companies are demonstrating impressive practical achievements.
For example, at CES 2026, the LG CLOiD robot demonstrated the ability to sort and fold laundry, the Allex from WIRobotics can withstand loads of up to 3 kilograms, and the SwitchBot Onero H1 learned to load a washing machine independently.
At the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, the Tiangong Ultra model ran 100 meters in 9.39 seconds, surpassing Usain Bolt's world record.
Japan Airlines has begun testing androids for baggage sorting at Haneda Airport, and the company 1X has developed the NEO home robot for $20,000.
