After washing, a favorite sweater can unexpectedly become shorter, narrower, or even shrink by several sizes. This problem is particularly common with wool and cashmere items, which are sensitive to water temperature and improper drying.

Styler explains how to try to return a sweater to its original shape, which fabrics can be restored, and what should strictly be avoided.

Why sweaters shrink after washing

Most often, sweaters change size due to incorrect water temperature, intense friction during washing, or an inappropriate drying mode.

Woolen items are especially sensitive to such care. Under the influence of moisture, heat, and mechanical friction, wool fibers can tangle together. As a result, the fabric becomes denser, and the sweater itself shrinks.

However, it is important to distinguish between normal shrinkage and felting of wool.

If the sweater remains soft and elastic, and the knitting loops are clearly visible, you can try to carefully restore some of its lost shape.

If the fabric has become stiff, thick, and felt-like, the fibers have likely felted significantly. In this case, it is practically impossible to return it to its original appearance.

How to stretch a sweater after washing

As explained by clothing manufacturer Fjällräven, it is important to avoid excessive friction, wringing, and improper drying when caring for woolen items. If the sweater has only slightly changed shape, you can try to gently reshape it while damp.

You will need:

  • A basin with cool water;
  • A special detergent for wool;
  • A large clean towel;
  • A flat surface for drying.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Check the label. If the manufacturer allows only professional cleaning, do not soak the sweater yourself.
  2. Prepare the water. Pour cool water into the basin and add a small amount of wool detergent according to the package instructions.
  3. Soak the sweater. Gently submerge the item in water for about 15–20 minutes. Do not rub the fabric or try to stretch it forcefully during soaking.
  4. Remove excess moisture. Take out the sweater and gently press it with your hands. Do not wring it. Then place it on a towel and roll it up together.
  5. Reshape the fabric. Lay the damp sweater on a dry towel. Gently pull it in the desired directions, gradually aligning the sleeves, width, and length.
  6. Let it dry. Dry the sweater horizontally at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sunlight.

Do not try to immediately stretch the item by several sizes. Excessive force can damage the knitting loops or deform the seams.

It is important to understand that this method can help only with slight shrinkage. If the wool has felted significantly, it will not be possible to restore the sweater to its original look.

Can a cashmere sweater be restored?

Cashmere is a delicate natural fiber that requires particularly careful handling. If a cashmere sweater has become slightly smaller after washing but remains soft, you can try the wet shaping method.

To do this, moisten the item according to the recommendations on the label, remove excess water with a towel, and lay it on a flat surface. After that, the fabric can be very carefully smoothed by hand to give it the desired shape.

Do not pull cashmere sharply by the sleeves or the bottom hem. Strong stretching can cause the knitwear to lose its symmetry.

If the sweater is expensive or heavily deformed, it is safer to contact a professional dry cleaner specializing in delicate fabrics. However, even professional care does not guarantee the restoration of felted fibers.

Will hair conditioner help?

Social media often recommends soaking a sweater in water with hair conditioner and then stretching it by hand. Proponents of this method believe that the conditioner softens the fibers and makes it easier to smooth out the fabric.

However, there is no convincing evidence that this method can return wool and cashmere items to their original size. The cosmetic product may also leave a residue on the fabric, and it will not eliminate strong felting of the wool.

Therefore, for expensive items, it is better to use special products designed for the care of wool and cashmere.

What other fabrics can be stretched after shrinking?

The result depends not only on the degree of shrinkage but also on the composition and structure of the fabric.

  • Wool. If the fibers have not felted, wet shaping sometimes helps to partially restore the shape. It is practically impossible to return heavily compacted wool to its original state.
  • Cashmere. Can be subjected to careful smoothing while damp, but strong stretching can damage delicate knitwear.
  • Cotton. Cotton sweaters can also shrink after washing, especially at high temperatures. Sometimes damp fabric can be slightly smoothed out, although full restoration is not guaranteed.
  • Acrylic and polyester. Synthetic fibers usually retain their shape better during proper washing. If an item has deformed due to excessive heating, it may be difficult to restore its original appearance.

Before attempting any restoration, be sure to check the fabric composition on the label.

What not to do with a shrunken sweater

Trying to save a favorite item, you can accidentally damage it even more.

Therefore, you should not:

  • Soak wool and cashmere in hot water;
  • Sharply pull a wet sweater in different directions;
  • Wring the fabric after soaking;
  • Dry the sweater on a hot radiator;
  • Try to stretch the item with an iron using strong pressure;
  • Hang a wet sweater on a hanger.

According to Woolmark recommendations, woolen sweaters are best dried horizontally, having previously been given the desired shape.

If you hang wet knitwear on a hanger, it may stretch unevenly under the weight of the water, and deformations may appear in the shoulder area.

How to properly wash wool and cashmere sweaters

To prevent the sweater from shrinking again, it is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Before washing, check the label. Some woolen items can be machine washed on a special mode, while others require hand washing or professional cleaning.

For items allowed for machine washing, Woolmark recommends using the wool program and an appropriate detergent.

It is also important to:

  • Not overload the washing machine drum;
  • Avoid intensive spinning if not permitted by the manufacturer;
  • Not use hot water without a corresponding indication on the label;
  • Not dry knitwear near radiators and heaters;
  • Gently smooth out the sweater after washing and dry it horizontally.

If a woolen item does not have noticeable stains, sometimes it is enough to simply air it out instead of washing it again. This will help reduce fiber wear and keep the clothes in shape longer.
