How to freshen up clothes without washing: Home methods for dry cleaning
While some issues always require professional attention, many fabrics can be refreshed at home. Certain methods can help freshen up relatively clean clothing and remove light stains, according to the Martha Stewart website.
How to freshen up clothes without washing
Refreshing clothing that generally doesn't require washing can be achieved at home through several methods. These techniques help extend the time between professional cleanings and keep garments looking their best without odors.
Steam clean
A handheld steamer can gently smooth out wrinkles. It’s advisable to put a clean, new sock over the steamer's end to prevent water spots on the clothing.
Brush off
A soft-bristle brush or clothing brush can remove surface dust, lint, and debris. Brush the fabric in the direction of the weave to avoid damaging delicate fibers.
Air out
Hanging clothes outside on a sunny day is an excellent way to refresh them and eliminate unpleasant odors. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause fabric colors to fade.
Spot clean with a detergent
Use a soft cloth to dab a natural detergent onto the stain, then blot with a clean, dry cloth. Always test the detergent on an inconspicuous area first.
Clean with baking soda
First, hang the item in a well-ventilated area, such as outside on a sunny day or a breezy room.
Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda on the garment to absorb odors. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight.
Afterwards, shake off or brush away the baking soda. Use a handheld steamer to gently steam the entire garment.
Be cautious not to over-wet the fabric, as excess moisture can damage some fabrics that should only be cleaned professionally.
Allow the item to air-dry in a well-ventilated space. Note that this method is effective for minor odors and stains.
Remove stains with vinegar
For visible stains on clean clothing, treat them separately. The method depends on the type of stain, but vinegar is suitable for most stains and fabrics.
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, and dampen a sponge or clean cloth with the solution. Gently blot and wipe the stained area, working from the edge of the stain towards the center.
Avoid scrubbing, as it can damage the fabric. Allow the stain to air-dry. This method can remove stains from clean clothing without additional washing.
