Many people regularly face the same problem: their closet is overflowing with clothes, yet every morning it feels like there's nothing to wear. The reason is often not a lack of clothing, but rather impulsive shopping, chasing short-lived trends, and the absence of a well-thought-out system.

Stylist Halyna Denysiuk explained how to buy less but make smarter choices, avoid impulse purchases, and gradually build a wardrobe that will serve you well for years.

Start with a wardrobe audit

Before heading out shopping, take an honest look at what you already own.

"Most people buy new clothes simply because they don't remember what they already have. A wardrobe audit helps you see the real picture: which pieces you wear regularly and which ones are just taking up space. Only after this kind of analysis does it become clear what you're actually missing," Halyna Denysiuk explained.

The stylist recommends keeping only the clothes that fit well, match your current lifestyle, and can be easily mixed and matched.

Say goodbye to emotional shopping

Many people know the feeling of wanting to boost their mood with a new dress or handbag. But those purchases often end up sitting unworn.

"Before paying for an item, ask yourself a few simple questions: Will I wear this at least ten times? Does it go with what I already have in my wardrobe? Would I still buy it if it weren't on sale? If the answer to even one of these questions is 'no,' it's better to leave it behind," the expert advised.

According to her, waiting just 24 hours is often enough for the urge to buy the item to disappear.

Build your wardrobe around timeless basics

The stylist believes that quality basics are the foundation of a wardrobe that lasts for years.

"I always recommend investing first in a well-made blazer, a great pair of jeans, classic trousers, a versatile coat, white shirts, basic T-shirts, and quality shoes. These are the pieces you'll wear dozens—or even hundreds—of times," Denysiuk emphasized.

She adds that trendy pieces still have their place, but they should only refresh an outfit rather than become the foundation of your wardrobe.

Buy less, but buy better

One high-quality item will often outlast several cheaper alternatives.

"People often try to save money the wrong way. They buy three inexpensive sweaters that lose their shape after a few washes instead of one well-made sweater that will last for years. In the end, they actually spend more," the stylist explained.

In her opinion, clothing should be viewed as a long-term investment rather than a short-lived pleasure.

Make a shopping list

Another common mistake is going shopping without a clear plan.

"When you know exactly what you're looking for, you're much less likely to buy something on impulse. I recommend keeping a shopping list and sticking to it even during seasonal sales," Halyna said.

She also suggests taking photos of your favorite outfits. This makes it easier to see what your wardrobe truly needs and avoid unnecessary purchases.

Don't chase every trend

Social media often creates the impression that your wardrobe needs a complete refresh every month. In reality, that's just marketing.

"Style isn't about endlessly chasing the latest trends. People remember you not because you buy new clothes every week, but because you have a distinctive personal style. Once you find your own look, the constant urge to shop gradually disappears," the expert explained.

According to her, trends should complement your wardrobe, not control it.

Think about the cost per wear

The stylist recommends judging purchases not by the price tag, but by how many times you'll actually wear the item.

"An expensive dress you wear only once often ends up costing far more than a quality pair of trousers or a coat you'll wear for years. That's why you should always think about the cost per wear, not just the purchase price," Denysiuk explained.

A quality wardrobe takes time to build

The stylist believes there's no need to completely overhaul your wardrobe in a single season.

"The best wardrobe is built gradually. Buy less, but shop with intention. Choose pieces you love today, and that will still feel relevant years from now. That's how you create a wardrobe that saves not only money, but also your time and stress every morning," Halyna concluded.
