Plum season is beginning. While this fruit offers many health benefits, it isn't suitable for everyone.
RBC-Ukraine explains who should avoid eating fresh plums.
People with stomach conditions
Fresh plums contain high levels of fruit acids, which can be harsh on the stomach lining. They may quickly irritate the digestive tract and trigger severe pain. Gastroenterologists strongly advise people with gastritis or stomach ulcers to avoid eating fresh plums.
They are especially risky on an empty stomach. Even healthy people may experience heartburn or stomach discomfort after eating them without a meal. Experts recommend enjoying plums only after a full meal.
People with bowel problems
Plums are well known for their natural laxative effect. For people who are prone to digestive disorders, this can become a serious problem. Fresh plums may worsen symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Parents of young children should also be cautious. The fruit's high fiber content can cause painful bloating and stomach discomfort in toddlers. Pediatricians recommend introducing plums into a child's diet gradually.
People with diabetes
Sweet varieties of plums contain significant amounts of natural fructose. People with diabetes should carefully monitor their portions, as eating too many plums may cause a spike in blood sugar levels.
People with kidney disease should also be cautious. Plums contain oxalates, compounds that may contribute to the formation of kidney stones.
