'He had a gun': Fico tells about new attempted assassination
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has claimed that there was a second attempt on his life, which occurred during his visit to the city of Dukla, citing his interview with the Standard.
Fico recalled that he traveled there on October 6 to mark the anniversary of the Carpatho-Dukla Operation during World War II. Several government officials and members of parliament, including Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, were present at the ceremony.
"We apprehended a very aggressive individual who despises me for my stance on Ukraine. He was armed; fortunately, he did not enter the area where we, the politicians, were but went to a section with the crowd. There, he passed through a metal detector, which revealed he was carrying a fully loaded gun," Fico recounted.
He also said that he felt "very lucky" during the assassination attempt that took place in May this year in the town of Handlová.
Attempt on Fico's life
On May 16, the Slovak government held an off-site session. After it concluded, while addressing citizens, an unknown assailant fired multiple shots at Fico, seriously injuring the politician.
The Prime Minister was immediately hospitalized and underwent surgery, but his condition remained critical for a long period, with doctors initially pessimistic. However, by May 31, he was transferred from a hospital in Banská Bystrica to Bratislava for further recovery.
The shooter, apprehended at the scene, turned out to be a 71-year-old writer.
