Hair oil has long had a reputation as an essential product that can make strands smooth, shiny, and healthy. However, this type of cosmetic product is not universal, and you may not actually need hair oil.

International hairstylist Ruslana Bela revealed which hair product is overrated.

What you should know about hair oil

The most overrated product is hair oil. The problem is that most people see it as a complete hair-care treatment, but that is a myth.

"To understand why, you need to know one simple principle. Everything has a charge. Wet hair has a negative charge. Shampoo also works with a negative charge – its job is to cleanse the hair," the expert said.

After the hair is cleansed, this charge needs to be balanced. That is why masks, conditioners, and balms have a positive charge. They condition the hair, smooth the cuticle, reduce static electricity, and make the hair smooth, flexible, and protected.

Hair oil, meanwhile, is neutral – it has neither a positive nor a negative charge. It does not condition, repair, or replenish the hair. Its role is only to help preserve the condition the hair is already in.

"That is why I don't consider it a basic at-home hair-care product," Ruslana Bela added.

What is the difference between conditioner, balm, and mask?

Many people think that masks, conditioners, and balms are three different products with different effects. As it turns out, they belong to the same group of products.

Overall, they perform the same function – conditioning the hair. The main difference is the texture and the amount of conditioning ingredients.

This myth often leads people to buy a mask, conditioner, and balm. However, in most cases, one properly chosen product is enough.

So basic at-home hair care is very simple and should consist of:

  • a quality shampoo
  • one properly chosen conditioning product – a mask, conditioner, or balm
  • heat protection, which should always be used before blow-drying or using hot styling tools

All other products are simply extras, not necessities.
