Hair growth stuck? Experts explain what’s really slowing it down

Hair that cannot grow past a certain length for years may indicate not only genetics, but also chronic scalp health issues or disruptions in the hair growth cycle. Why hair sometimes seems to stop at one length, even with proper care — read more below, according to Real Simple.
What is chronic hair length?
This is the genetically determined maximum length your hair can reach. After reaching this limit, the strand stops growing and falls out, making room for a new one.
According to trichologist Shab Caspara, what is often referred to as chronic hair length usually comes down to two main factors: nutrition and inflammation.
When hair cannot grow beyond a certain length, the main causes are usually nutrition and inflammation. Although the hair technically continues to grow, the strands become weaker over time.
Without sufficient protein intake — especially complete amino acid sources such as red meat — and with increased inflammation caused by chronic stress, high cortisol levels, or underlying health conditions, hair may become thinner, more fragile, and more prone to breakage before it reaches greater length.
The problem is often not that hair has stopped growing entirely, but that it is unable to retain length.
What causes hair breakage?
Poor nutrition and chronic stress are among the biggest causes, but daily habits can also worsen the situation. Frequent heat styling, bleaching, and harsh chemical treatments can weaken the hair shaft over time, increase breakage, and make hair appear thinner.
Inflammation also plays a major role, as it can disrupt the hair growth cycle and affect overall hair health.
What to do for longer and stronger hair
Supporting healthier hair growth is not just about buying another shampoo or getting extra trims. Solving the problem requires a more holistic approach focused on strengthening hair from within.
Reducing the use of heat styling, avoiding bleaching and aggressive chemical treatments, and prioritizing protein intake can all help maintain stronger and healthier hair.
Scalp circulation can also be improved through massage to create a healthier environment for hair growth.
