Summer is the season we always eagerly anticipate. The sun and high temperatures significantly affect the condition of our hair during this time.

Hairdresser and stylist Ruslana Biela explained how to care for your locks in summer.

How to care for your hair in summer

The expert said that, in reality, summer hair care is the same as in winter and spring. This includes using shampoo, conditioner, or mask, and leave-in treatments suitable for your hair type.

Sea and mountains

Ruslana shared a life hack: apply a mask or conditioner (even if it’s not ideal for your hair but you happen to have it) on damp hands and distribute it thoroughly, especially on the ends. Then, cover your hair with a cap or hat to protect it from excess ultraviolet rays.

"Why is any conditioner or mask suitable in this case? Because we only need the silicone properties to coat the hair as a temporary shield," the hairdresser explained.

"Sea air and water act on our hair like salt on eggplants. If you sprinkle salt on cut eggplant, moisture will come out. Similarly, salt crystallizes on hair and draws out its natural moisture," the stylist added.

In the mountains, where there is no salt in the air and water, the conditioner hack will protect your hair from high levels of ultraviolet radiation.

Pool or water park

If you visit a pool or water park, be aware that diluted chlorine is added to the water for disinfection. Chlorine erodes the hair shaft.

Blondes, in particular, may notice their strands taking on an unpleasant greenish tint after swimming. Chlorine in the pool acts as an oxidizer, allowing copper molecules and other chemicals to bind with the protein in the hair shaft.

"But my previously mentioned lifehack will help protect your hair from the chemical surprises of chlorinated water. A rubber cap won’t protect your hair. At the end of the day, be sure to rinse everything out and wash your hair," Ruslana concluded.
