Mold in the home is not just an aesthetic problem; it’s also a health risk. It’s important to know why it appears and how to effectively get rid of it, according to Good Housekeeping.

How to prevent mold from appearing

The key to prevention is controlling indoor humidity. Follow these tips to create an environment where mold cannot grow:

  • Use a dehumidifier – Keep humidity below 50%. Make sure the device is suitable for your room size.
  • Vent moisture outside – Bathroom fans and clothes dryers should be vented outdoors.
  • Open doors and windows during showers – This helps the bathroom exhaust work effectively during and after showers.
  • Avoid storing items in damp areas – Keep bedding, books, and furniture away from basements or attics.

How to get rid of mold in the shower

Mold thrives in warm, damp conditions, allowing it to grow on shower tiles, grout, and curtains. With the right cleaning solution, you can keep your shower free of unsightly mold spots.

Take safety precautions: Wear gloves, eye protection, and a mask. Open a window and run the bathroom fan for ventilation.

  • Spray cleaning solution on mold spots. Wait a few minutes for the solution to work. The mold should start disappearing.
  • Use a sponge if needed. For stubborn spots, scrub gently to remove them.

How to remove mold from walls

If you notice mold on drywall, plaster walls, or ceilings, it can be removed by following these steps:

  • Clean the surface – Mix a small amount of dish soap with water. Use a sponge or brush to apply the solution in small circular motions.
  • Rinse and let dry – Rinse the sponge, immerse it in clean water, wring well, and wipe the surface. Allow it to dry completely in the air.
  • Treat stains with bleach solution – Mix 3/4 cup of bleach with warm water, or 3 tbsp of bleach per 1 liter of water for smaller spots. Wear rubber gloves and apply the mixture.
  • Rinse thoroughly – Use warm water to wash the area dry and blot with a clean cloth.

Natural remedies for mold removal

If you prefer natural solutions, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar are worth trying. However, they may take longer to work than bleach.

  • Hydrogen peroxide – Pour a 3% solution into a spray bottle and apply it to the affected area. Leave for 10 minutes, then remove the mold.
  • Vinegar – Pour undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle and apply to the area. Leave for one hour, then wipe with water and allow it to dry.
