Germany to deploy special forces to guard facilities near Baltic Sea
In response to potential sabotage threats, Germany's elite counter-terrorism unit GSG 9 will be deployed to the Baltic Sea to safeguard underwater infrastructure in both the Baltic and North Seas, reports Tagesschau.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser personally decided to station the special forces in the town of Neustadt on the Baltic Sea.
"This location will enable the unit to respond more quickly to crises both at sea and in northern Germany," the report stated.
The article also says that Germany has been regularly monitoring the activity of Russian spy ships that are "mapping the network of pipelines and other underwater lines on the seabed of the North and Baltic Seas."
Sabotage on gas pipelines
On the night of September 26, 2022, explosions occurred on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.
The explosions damaged three of the four pipeline strings. Law enforcement agencies from several countries, including Germany, conducted investigations into the incident.
