Germany closes consulate in Kaliningrad
Germany has closed its consulate general in the Russian city of Kaliningrad today, on November 30. The information comes from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"The Consulate General in Kaliningrad will be closed on November 30, 2023," the statement said.
It is noted that consular and passport matters in the Kaliningrad region are handled by the Consulate General in St. Petersburg.
"As for visa processing, it is exclusively handled by the visa department of the Embassy in Moscow," the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.
Germany-Russia relations
Berlin has condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine, supported the imposition of sanctions against the Kremlin, and regularly provides military, financial, and humanitarian aid to Kyiv.
In April of this year, Germany decided on a mass expulsion of Russian diplomats from the country. Russia threatened a mirror response.
Later, Moscow imposed restrictions on the number of employees allowed to work in German representations in Russia. Germany had to reduce its staff to 100 people.
