German Foreign Minister calls for international law reform to Bring Putin to justice
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called for the reform of international law to hold Russian dictator Vladimir Putin accountable for the war against Ukraine, Tagesschau reported.
Baerbock urges the reform of international law to ensure that those responsible for aggressive wars, such as Vladimir Putin, can be held accountable. "No one can wage aggressive warfare in the 21st century and go unpunished," she said prior to her trip to New York.
It is reported that she will participate in a ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the United Nations. She also has planned meetings with Ronald Lauder, the President of the World Jewish Congress, and a speech at the UN Security Council.
"The International Criminal Court is already a sharp sword in the eyes of criminals. For the victims, it is a hope that their suffering will not go unpunished," said the German Foreign Minister.
Baerbock said that the gap in law enforcement is particularly painful when it comes to crimes against "the most precious thing we have – our peace," and the demands for criminal prosecution remain too high. According to her, international law must adapt to the circumstances of the 21st century.
Arrest warrant for Putin
In mid-March of this year, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Putin and the child rights commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova. The court considers them guilty of the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia.
According to the court's decision, Putin can be arrested in 123 countries around the world that have ratified the Rome Statute or recognized the ICC's jurisdiction. The arrest warrant for Putin and Lvova-Belova will remain in effect for their entire lives.
Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin stated that the Hague arrest warrant allows for Putin's arrest outside of Russia and his extradition to face trial.
