Pakistan says it summoned India's chargé d’affaires on Saturday to protest the killing of two Pakistani civilians by Indian border guards, according to Bloomberg.

"The BSF personnel resorted to unprovoked lethal force against unarmed civilians," the Pakistani Foreign Ministry says in a statement, specifying that the incident occurred on Friday, October 2.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry also says it "categorically rejects any attempt to mischaracterize the deceased as infiltrators" and calls on India to "conduct an immediate, transparent and credible investigation into the incident, take appropriate disciplinary and legal action against those found responsible, and formally communicate the findings."

India, in turn, summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Pakistani embassy to express its protest and "categorically rejected" the accusations made by the Pakistani government.

"This incident highlights a clear pattern of repeated cross-border movement by armed narcotics syndicates operating from Pakistan," the statement says.

India also demands that the Pakistani authorities take "appropriate remedial measures."

What else important to know about India and Pakistan

Relations between the two countries, which have fought four major wars since gaining independence in 1947, have remained tense ever since an armed clash last year brought them to the brink of a new conflict. The incident was triggered by the killing of 26 people, mostly Indian tourists, in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir.

In the aftermath, India labeled the incident a terrorist attack and accused Pakistan of involvement, but Islamabad denies this.
