French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to announce the name of the new Prime Minister in the near future, according to Le Figaro.

Emmanuel Macron has "taken note" of the fall of François Bayrou’s government, which on September 8 was brought down by a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly.

"The president will appoint a new prime minister in the coming days," the Élysée Palace said in a communiqué.

On Tuesday, Macron is expected to meet with Prime Minister François Bayrou to formally accept the resignation of his government. Bayrou was appointed head of the French government in December 2024.

In France, the president has the power to appoint the head of government, while the National Assembly can at any time pass a vote of no confidence to remove the cabinet.

This was the case with Michel Barnier’s cabinet, appointed in September 2024, which lasted until December.

All foreign and security policy in France is directed by President Emmanuel Macron, who has faced growing problems in parliament. In June 2024, Macron called snap parliamentary elections to counter the rise of the far-right National Rally, which placed third. The presidential coalition finished second, while victory went to the left-wing New Popular Front.

None of the three strongest political forces won a majority, resulting in ongoing instability for the government.
